VDP.GROSSE LAGE A monumental vineyard, like a great wall rises along the Saar. The steep slope, with more than 70 percent incline and a soil of slate and an underlying weathered red rock (Rotliegend), always produces wines that benefit enormously from bottle aging. An Altenberg often takes years until it opens up. Then, the wines are powerful, mineral, and distinctive.

VDP.GROSSE LAGE The term „hell“ comes from the Middle High German for „helde“, which means no more than „steep slope“. It is located adjacent to Kanzemer Altenberg and next to the famous Wiltinger braune Kupp and has a similar soil structure: medium to deep gray slate with clayey parts. This 1.5-hectare site is also in our sole possession.

VDP.GROSSE LAGE The chronicle reports that Alfred Margrave of Brandenburg, who plundered Trier in 1552, was prevented from pillaging the monastery of St. Martin Abbey, only because of the quality of the wines from Augenscheiner. He and his soldiers were appeased with four casks of Augenscheiner and left without having achieved anything. Augenscheiner is a monopole site and is the vineyard that we have owned for the longest time. The proximity to the Mosel and the warmth coming from the colored sandstone cliffs from behind give this vineyard a particularly favorable microclimate. Besides Riesling, we also have Grauer Burgunder (Pinot Gris) and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir).

VDP.GROSSE LAGE Piesporter Goldtröpfchen is one of the warmest sites on the Mosel. The vineyards open up like an amphitheater against the river. The Romans already knew of the special status of this site, which gives top-quality wines in every vintage. The heavy and well-weathered slate soil produces wines that are characterized by lush fruit and rather mild acidity.

VDP.GROSSE LAGE In the Schubertslay, a small enclave in Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, our estate has some of its oldest vines. The ungrafted old Riesling vines, planted in 1902, grow in a clayey slate soil on small terraces. This warm site produces high-quality, powerful dry wines, as well as residually sweet and nobly sweet Rieslings.

VDP.GROSSE LAGE This world-famous site is located in a side valley, nearby Wiltingen, east of the Saar. Our estate owns two hectares in Scharzhofberg. In particular, the stony gray slate soil and the extremely favorable microclimate, which was created for Riesling, makes this one of Germany's top sites. This vineyard creates complex Rieslings, with zesty acidity and pronounced, almost smoky, minerality.

VDP.GROSSE LAGE This excellent site around the Schloss Saarfels was planted from 1912 to 1914. The sparkling-wine producer Adolf Wagner had 75,000 vines planted on 12 hectares around the newly built chateau. He acquired the vineyard land at auction. After the sale of the chateau, the entire monopole site remained entirely in the hands of the Vereinigte Hospitien. The Rieslings are substantial with exotic-fruity notes.
